Introduction

OneWeb, a global communications company aiming to provide internet connectivity through a constellation of Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites, has significantly impacted Thailand’s digital landscape. A pivotal moment in this journey was its partnership with mu Space Corp, a leading space technology company in Thailand. This partnership, announced on April 9, 2019, marked the beginning of a series of milestones that have influenced the country’s connectivity and technological advancement.

Key Milestones

1.One Web launched satellites and provided services since February 2019

One Web, founded in 2012, launched its first six satellites into orbit in 2019. It has since then turned into a leading internet connectivity provider through its constellation of LEO satellites. Being a global communications company, One Web aims to have global coverage for its services.

 

2. Establishment of Gateway in Thailand June 2022
In June 2021, OneWeb, in collaboration with National Telecom Plc , began establishing OneWeb Gateway at Ubon Ratchathani Province, Thailand. These ground stations, critical for managing data traffic between satellites and end-users, enhance the efficiency and stability of the internet service. The establishment of this gateway marked a significant step in ensuring robust and reliable connectivity across the country.

3. Signing Distribution Partner Agreement with mu Space Corp March, 2023
On this date, OneWeb officially signed an agreement with mu Space Corp to distribute OneWeb’s satellite broadband services in Thailand and other Indochina countries. This partnership was set to enhance internet connectivity in underserved and remote areas, facilitating digital inclusion and economic development. 

4. OneWeb Satellite Deployment and Market Access
As mentioned above, OneWeb launched its first six satellites in February 2019 and continues several satellite launches to total 634 satellites in June 2023 and aims to provide fully global coverage in 2024.
Oneweb has rolled out its service since 2021 to Europe countries and The United States and expands to full global service in 2024.

5. Global Coverage, Available in Thailand (2024)
One Web now provides global coverage and is also available in Thailand from 2024. One Web also has a Memorandum of Understand signed between them and mu Space, which helps provide satellite internet in Thailand.

6. Future Prospects (2025 and Beyond)

mu Space will look to continue to innovate in the satellite internet sector with One Web. With the continuous goal of providing underserved areas with satellite internet coverage.
