Solar Panels are an essential part of satellites as they are the primary source of power in space. Solar panels convert the light from the sun into energy, ultimately providing the satellite with the power to function. Just like every other satellite, mu Space’s mu-B200 is also equipped with solar panels.
Solar Panels are made up of small solar cells that once combined can function and provide power. The solar cells in space, just like the ones used on Earth, are powered by sunlight. Solar cells work better in space due to abundant sunlight and without factors like clouds, dust, and the atmosphere in general, although the intense sunlight degrades the solar cells much faster than on Earth. With the emergence of nanotechnology in the energy, material, and aerospace industries, solar cells are now even more efficient and cheaper. For example, nanotechnology is used to enhance solar cell efficiency through Quantum Dots. The different sizes of the Quantum Dots allow them to capture different wavelengths of the solar spectrum, consequently, enabling solar cells to absorb excess photon energy. Other uses of nanotechnology in solar cells include nanofibers and other nanoparticles, both of which are used to improve the performance of solar cells.
mu Space assembles the solar panels in our state-of-the-art cleanroom, due to production involving sensitive optical devices it’s best to produce them in the cleanroom. They are then placed into the main satellite structure. Solar cells generate energy, therefore are considered a power source. The cleanroom, located in mu Space’s Factory 1, was designed to eliminate tiny particles by using HEPA filters, much like some HVAC. The cleanroom is tested with multiple HEPA filters based on its dust’s grain size distribution. ISO 14644:2015 is the base standard and mu Space’s cleanrooms were built following those standards, therefore passing the certification requirements.
mu Space continues to develop high-quality components for satellites and other space-related projects, the solar panel is among various products the company sells separately. These panels are vital to the function of the satellite and its power system.
